Matt's take
Desk real estate is a real constraint that almost no buyers budget for. A "cheap" printer that takes a 500x500 mm footprint on your desk is expensive if it means losing a monitor. Compact machines keep printer footprint close to the build area and put the spool on top or to the side, so you can actually put the thing down somewhere that isn't the floor. The trade-off: smaller build volumes, usually bedslinger motion, and fewer premium features. For minis, models and small functional parts, none of that matters.
Frequently asked
What counts as "compact" for a 3D printer? +
A footprint under ~400x400 mm. The Bambu A1 Mini, Creality Ender-3 V3 SE and Elegoo Centauri are in this size class. They fit on a standard dorm or office desk without displacing a monitor.
Is a small 3D printer worse quality? +
Not at all. Print quality depends on tuning, motion rigidity and hot-end control - not size. A well-tuned A1 Mini prints Benchies that are indistinguishable from a full-size printer of the same generation.
How portable are compact 3D printers? +
Light enough to move between rooms (4-8 kg) but not travel cases. The PEI plate and z-axis don't like being banged around. If you need to move it monthly, budget a dedicated shelf or bag.
