FDM printers, the ones that squeeze molten plastic through a hot nozzle layer by layer, are where almost everyone starts. There is a good reason for that. A capable entry FDM machine now sits somewhere around 150 to 250 pounds or dollars, and that buys more printer than double the money did a few years back. Auto bed levelling, direct drive and a heated bed used to be premium features. Now they are the baseline.

Where FDM makes sense
FDM is the right first printer for the vast majority of people. It prints PLA and PETG cheaply, the parts are strong enough for brackets, jigs and functional bits, and a failed print costs you pennies rather than a bottle of resin. If you want to learn the craft without a mess, this is the category.

The honest negative
FDM is not magic. Even the good cheap machines still ask something of you. You will level a bed, chase a stubborn first layer, and eventually swap a worn nozzle or a tired PTFE tube. Open-frame printers also limit you to PLA and PETG in practice, because ABS and ASA warp badly without an enclosure.
None of that is a dealbreaker. It is just the deal.
