For miniatures, resin wins, and it is not really close on detail. An FDM printer can do minis now with a 0.2mm nozzle and slow speeds, but the layer lines show on faces and thin blades. Resin gives you crisp detail straight off the plate. The trade-off is the mess, the smell, and the gloves. If you only care about tabletop-quality minis, get a resin printer, just know exactly what you are signing up for. Why resin wins on detail

Resin cures a whole layer at once against a screen, so the resolution comes from pixels, not from how precisely a nozzle can be dragged around. That is why a 40mm mini off a resin plate shows clean chainmail, sharp facial features and blade edges you could almost cut yourself on.

FDM builds a mini from extruded lines of plastic. On a large model that is fine, but at mini scale the layer lines land right where the detail should be. You can hide some of it with a fine nozzle and careful slicing, but you are managing a limitation rather than avoiding it.

For pure display and painting detail, resin is the honest answer.

Where FDM still earns its place

FDM is not out of the fight, it just plays a different role. Terrain, bases, large-scale models and anything you will handle roughly all suit FDM better. It is cheaper per part, the material is tougher, and a failed print costs pennies rather than a puddle of resin.

If your table needs scenery and big centrepieces as much as it needs crisp heroes, an FDM machine covers that far more cheaply. A cheap FDM printer is genuinely worth it for that role.

The honest negative on resin

Here is the part the detail photos never show. Resin is messy and it smells, and uncured resin is an irritant you handle in gloves with a window open. Every mini needs washing in IPA and curing under UV before it is safe to touch and paint. The consumables, resin, alcohol, gloves and filters, are a real running cost the sticker price hides.

If you print in a bedroom or a shared space with no ventilation, think hard before choosing resin.

Cost in context

The printers cost similar money, roughly 150 to 250 for an entry machine either way. The difference is what happens after. FDM keeps eating cheap filament, while resin adds washing and curing kit and consumables that stack up faster. Check current machine prices on the resin hub so you are comparing today’s numbers, not last year’s.

So resin for the fine detail, FDM for terrain and everything bigger. Most mini printers end up owning both eventually, myself included.
